Our feet are the foundation of the rest of our body.
Ask yourself these questions….
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â How do you look after your feet?
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â How do they feel?
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Are they functioning well?
Why should we look after them?
Our feet are the foundations of the rest of our body! The better your feet function, the better you will perform doing the things that you love and you will lessen the risk of injury or falls. Not only will your feet feel better, but it will also have a flow-on effect to the rest of your body. With this in mind, having your feet assessed and treated may be necessary to treat your knee, hip, lower back, shoulder or neck pain, and may also help improve circulation and even your balance.
Getting to know your feet....
The foot and ankle consist of 31 bones, 33 joints and collectively more than 100 ligaments, tendons and muscles! They are highly sensory which is important to interpret the surfaces we walk on, they absorb impact and help us balance. Our feet, all of those muscles, joints and tissues like to move! The structure and function of our feet affect the way we walk and run or any other activity that involves our feet being on the ground or other surfaces.Â
Your feet affect the way the rest of your body moves and functions. This is why they may be considered when you have other aches and pains occurring in your body.
Let’s look after our feet better….
Unfortunately, the footwear we wear on a daily basis, and the sedentary lifestyles we may lead, can have an undesirable effect on our foot health. Our feet can become weak, stiff, and painful and their appearance can start changing (and even start looking like the shape of our shoes!). This may increase the risk of conditions such as bunions, plantar fasciitis, tendinopathies, fallen arches, cramping, blisters, hammer toe and heel spurs, to name a few. Â
Good news though! These are just some of the conditions that we can treat and manage with osteopathic treatment.
How can osteopathy help?
Osteopathy treats the body as a whole functioning unit made up of many structures and tissues; generating a balance so that the body can heal and self-regulate itself. The benefits of osteopathic treatment support good health, provide pain relief when needed and allow freedom of movement, in people of all ages, from babies to the elderly.Â
Your osteopathic appointment will start with me asking you about your health and your concerns, followed by a thorough assessment and treatment. Treatment may consist of gentle, hands-on manipulation of the joints, muscles and other tissues around your feet and ankles, and other parts of your body also may be considered. Additional treatment techniques may include taping, dry needling and exercise prescription. Beneficial advice may be given to you about how to manage and treat your own foot health. Treatment is very unique to the individual, to you.
